Picture Gallery Lesson |
|
A lesson in using Voloper's Picture Gallery version 1.0 |
| If you are a client of WSI and have purchased a
Voloper web site, you may have purchased Picture Gallery (PG) with your site package. Your Internet Consultant (IC) will provide
you with a manual on PG v1.0. Outlined below is a lesson which compliments the PG manual and which illustrate a real and practical
application.
This manual is written from an IC perspective training Client's in the use of the PG. "You" or "Your"
means "the Client".
To obtain this lesson (.54 MB) in a downloadable zip file, email
vwwanner@firstwebdemos.com. We will reply with download instructions. |

Before Getting Started
Have your IC provide you with a copy
of PGv1 Manual PictureGallery10_manual.pdf. Browse through it. There are
only 11 pages.
-
Think about how many different topics you want in your photo gallery.
Organize your topics alphabetically with a good descriptive name that people will identify with.
-
Within each topic, organize your photos. Make sure your photos have
descriptive names. I prefer alphabetical names that say something about the picture. If you do use numbers, such
as picture59834567 ...., my guess is you will quickly become confused in loading the pictures to the gallery.
You will be doing a lot of "windowing" going back and forth to look at the pictures, the file name, and the caption for the
pictures.
-
Determine what size you want your pictures to display at. A width of 400
pixels at 96 dpi is adequate for most viewing. A resolution of 96 dpi is adequate because computer monitors can not display anything
higher anyway. For visual consistency, all pictures within a particular subject should be displayed at the same size.
-
Determine if you pictures are optimized for web viewing. JPEGs can generally be compressed
up to 20-35% without appreciably loss in quality. I usually compress at 20-25%. A compression of 20-25% can generally cut your file
size by 75-80% over captured size in a digital camera.
-
If you do not compress your pictures, load times will be long and your viewers
will leave. People are impatient!
-
If you don't know how to compress pictures, consult someone who does or learn it.
There are some free resizers on the market. PIXResizer from David De Grot at
http://bluefive.pair.com/
is freeware. Of course MS Image Composer, PaintShopPro, Adobe, and
others are also more than capable programs. If you have hundreds of pictures, you might want a program that can batch process.
-
Determine what size your thumbnails need to be. I like something around 70-80 pixels.
That's about an inch at 72 dpi, a little less at 96 dpi.
-
Organize your files and directories so that it is
convenient to upload to your host Voloper site. Have a sub-directory for each subject within your Photo Gallery.

Opening and Configuring PG
Go to the Admin
area of your web site. On the blue panel at the left, find Picture Gallery and click on it. The screen below
appears. Click on Picture Galleryagain in the green menu. The Galleries
menu appears. |
| |
 |
| |
 |
| |
| You may not have anything in your Gallery. That's OK.
See the blue Configure Gallerybelow the beige row. Click on it. The Configuration
screen below opens. |
| |
 |
| |
This is where you set up how your Gallery will look. Most of the
input text boxes here are self explanatory. If you don't know how many rows and columns to use, start with 4x3, or 3x2, or something small.
You can always go back and increase it. Of course the larger your thumbnail widths and heights, the fewer rows and columns you can have. Here
are some tips:
|
|
If you don't want a border around your picture, uncheck the box. If you click on Select Colour
, a color chart of 240 or so web safe colors will appear. Just pick your color, and the number will be
put in automatically. |
|
| If you set your Popup width and height greater
than your picture size, the picture background will appear. This is almost like a matte border on a framed image. |
|
| Every picture you have will have a thumbnail
view which will be linked to a larger view if you click on the thumbnail. The large view is the Popup view. |
|
| I suggest checking
Allow Previous-Nextbecause then you can scroll successively in the large Popup view. |
|

Adding Your Gallery Items
Return to the Galleries
Menu. To add additional items, click on Add New Info.
The following screen will appear. Add your item; be sure to click on Add Info;
then return Back to Galleries, or add another item.
When you are in the Galleries Menu,
click on the Edit Gallery link of any of the individual items. For example, clicking on Edit Gallery of Member Photos brings up the
screen below.
You may do a number of functions here. You can delete the row by clicking on theTrash icon. You
can move the row up or down in the table by clicking on the
black arrows. You can add another item by clicking on Add New Info
. You can not sort the items by clicking on the titles of each column. You have to sort using
the black arrows.
You may sort the items in the Galleries menu by clicking on the Gallery Name
title. |
| |
| |
